The Waiting

The Waiting is a site-responsive installation exploring feminine presence, transformation and the quiet power of an uncanny gathering.

Created for the Raveningham Sculpture Trail, seven hybrid female figures gather beneath a circle of cherry trees, accompanied by suspended ceramic fragments, bells and delicate strands of thread. Emerging gently from the landscape, the installation creates an uncanny environment where sculpture, landscape and ritual begin to blur, inviting visitors to move slowly through the space.

Rather than illustrating a single narrative, The Waiting imagines a gathering of hybrid feminine figures whose presence is quietly bound to the surrounding landscape. Neither entirely human nor entirely creature, they suggest relationships between women, plants, animals and place, proposing a world where feminine presence is inseparable from the living landscape. They appear less as individual characters than as members of an ancient community connected through ritual, memory and the living world.

Developed through an intuitive process of wrapping, layering and continual experimentation, The Waiting marks my first sustained exploration of sculpture as a primary language. Combining Modroc, plaster, textiles, ceramics, dried flora and found materials, the work embraces material transformation, allowing each surface to retain traces of making, weathering and repair. These experimental processes have become the foundation of my continuing sculptural practice.

The Waiting represents an important transition within my practice, establishing a sculptural language that continues to develop through ceramics, relief works and immersive installations, exploring feminine presence, mythology and imagined cosmologies. Rather than presenting a complete world, the installation offers its first traces, inviting viewers to encounter a place where women, landscape and symbolic forms exist in quiet, enduring relationship.
